5 Unexpected Things I’ve Seen at Weddings

And That I Secretly Loved…

One of the best parts of being a marriage celebrant in Melbourne is that no two weddings are ever the same. Sure, there’s paperwork, there are vows, and yes, I legally have to say those few awkward sentences (#IYKYK)... But the rest? That’s where the magic happens.

I’ve had the absolute joy of witnessing so many creative, hilarious, and beautifully unexpected moments that couples have worked into their wedding ceremonies and today, I’m spilling the tea on five of my absolute faves.

If you're on the hunt for unique wedding ideas, this list might just spark something a little wild, a little wonderful, and totally you.

🪑 1. Witness Roulette: Names Under the Seat

Instead of pre-selecting their official witnesses, the couple decided to leave it up to fate (and a little tape). Before guests arrived, they secretly taped two envelopes under random seats each one containing a name: either the bride’s or the groom’s.

After the ceremony, I asked everyone to check under their chair... and the two guests who found a name were announced as the official wedding witnesses. Cue gasps, laughter, and very proud surprised signers. It was the perfect blend of fun and sentimental, with a hint of “Oprah moment” energy.

🟡 Why it works: It gets guests involved in a totally unexpected way and takes the pressure off choosing someone ahead of time. It also makes for a brilliant icebreaker moment and amazing photos.
🟡 Modern celebrant inspiration tip: I’ll help you coordinate the timing and the wording so your surprise moment lands perfectly—plus make sure the legal bits stay smooth and stress-free behind the scenes.

🐾 2. A Dog as the Ring Bearer (In a Bow Tie, Obviously)

As a proud dog mum, I nearly cried when the couple’s border collie trotted down the aisle with the rings clipped to a flower-adorned harness. He sat perfectly between them during the vows like he knew exactly what was happening.
And yes, he got treats and cuddles the whole time.

🟡 Why it works: Your pet is part of your family why shouldn’t they be part of your ceremony too?
🟡 Unique wedding idea: Let me know if you need pet-sitter recs or tips for training your pup for the big moment!

🍦 3. Ice Cream Instead of Cake (or as well as)

This couple ditched the traditional tiered cake and opted for a surprise gelato cart straight after the ceremony. Everyone lined up for cones and sundaes before heading into the reception. It was a hot summer afternoon and honestly? The perfect vibe.

🟡 Why it works: It was fun, interactive, and everyone (yes, even Grandma) LOVED it.
🟡 Modern wedding tip: Small, memorable touches go a long way—and you’re allowed to skip the bits that don’t excite you.

🎤 4. A Mid-Ceremony Shot with Their Guests

Right before the vows, the couple pulled out mini tequila bottles and handed a few around to their front-row guests. They raised a toast before making their promises, and the vibe was both hilarious and heartfelt.
It was unexpected, meaningful, and a little bit cheeky just like them.

🟡 Why it works: It broke the nerves and got everyone smiling.
🟡 Fun wedding moment idea: If shots aren’t your thing, try a toast with champagne, kombucha, or your fave craft beer.

✍️ 5. A Surprise Tattoo After the Ceremony

Yep, you read that right. After the ceremony (and legal signing), the couple had organised for a tattoo artist to be on-site to ink tiny matching designs one of their favourite lyrics in fine line script.
It was just for the two of them, and it was completely private. I only found out when they showed me after. Instant mic drop moment.

🟡 Why it works: It’s deeply personal and symbolic—like wearing your love (literally) on your sleeve.
🟡 Unique wedding inspo: You don’t have to perform for the crowd. Do something just for you two that’s where the magic is.

Final Thoughts: Do It Your Way

The biggest lesson I’ve learned as a celebrant? The best ceremonies reflect the couple, not tradition.
Whether you want to make your guests laugh, cry, or dance their way out of the ceremony space, I’m all in.
Let’s ditch the boring, embrace the unexpected, and create a moment that feels like you from start to finish.

If you’re after fun wedding moments, modern celebrant inspiration, or someone to say “yes” to your quirkiest idea I’d love to be in your corner.
